"Weans on Wheels" is an Edinburgh-based project that aims to get more families and children cycling more often.

Cycling with your kids is one of the best things you can do as a family. Cycling is mobility and recreation rolled into one.

It's never too early to start your kids cycling, whether transporting them by bike, or teaching them to ride their own bike.

This blog will bring together info and news directly relevant to cycling for families.  For broader cycling-related info and news (esp Edinburgh / Lothians), see www.spokes.org.uk

- For the  "How to be a Cycling Family" factsheet produced by Spokes in 2011, see http://www.spokes.org.uk/wordpress/2011/04/cycle-commuting-with-kids-latest/

- A second factsheet on getting children cycling independently for everyday travel is now available (June 2012) - "How to: Get Your Child Cycling", downloadable from http://www.spokes.org.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/P4062-Spokes-Parents-Factsheet-PRF4.pdf   (or via www.spokes.org.uk)

WHY DO IT??

Way back in 1998 the Scotsman reported, "Pupils given lifts in cars may do less well in class," based on a Fit for Life project promoting bike commuting on new school routes, and monitored by a Glasgow University team [Spokes Bulletin 70 - see www.spokes.org.uk].

The evidence is now growing more and more robust - active children do better academically - and walking or cycling to school are ideal ways to be active. Kids who cycle to school are also more likely to cycle to other activities and to have healthier cardio-vascular profiles.
